Costing a works order

When you cost a works order, planned costs are refreshed based on the most recent component costs.

Note: When costing older works orders, subsequent component price changes may distort the comparison between planned and actual costs.

Because you can issue components to a works order when the cost of the component is not yet known, the components are represented on the works order costing, using the historical cost of the item (or the standard cost, if appropriate). If components use FIFO or Actual costing, the historical cost is overridden with the actual value during the process to close the works order. This ensures that the final costing is based on current, not historical values for such components.

What do you want to do?

Cost a works order

Open: Works Orders > Processing > Cost Works Order.

  1. Select the required works order from the Reference drop-down list.
  2. To calculate the costs, click Cost.
  3. If the Ignore Zero Costs check box is not selected, and the costing process encounters an item with a zero cost, the Enter Cost Prices window appears.
    • Enter the cost for the item.
    • Click OK to return to the Cost Batch Works Order window.
  4. To produce a report detailing the current works order costs, click Print.

  5. To display a graphical breakdown of the costs, click Breakdown of costs.

    The unit cost of any manufactured item may vary depending upon the size of the batch. This is due to the setup costs and any variable subcontract operationsWork tasks that are subcontracted to external organisations or to other internal departments within the organisation. costs which may be spread over a greater number of units.

  6. To close the Cost Batch Works Order window, click Close.

Open: Records > Batch > Amend Works Order.

  1. Select the required works order.
  2. Select the Latest Costs tab.
  3. Click Breakdown of Planned Costs to display a graphical breakdown of the planned costs.
  4. Click Breakdown of Actual Costs to display a graphical breakdown of the actual costs.
  5. Click Cost Now to calculate the works order costs.
  6. Click Close.
