Common Internet Submission errors

Submission error Cause and solution

1001

Some of the information you're trying to submit contains spaces or is formatted in a way that fails HMRC validation. The details in your payroll software that cause the failure are identified in the error description.

For example the following text relates to the email address held in e-Submissions > e-Submission Settings > Contact Details tab and indicates an issue with this email address:

You must correct any errors before trying to submit again.

HMRC are unable to identify you. Before trying to submit again, check that:

  • You've completed the tasks in the Getting Started section of the help topic Communicating with HMRC online.
  • The user name, password, Tax District and Employer’s Reference entered in Sage 50 Payroll match those used to register with HMRC.

Note: To check that the online service has been activated, and that information used to register with HMRC matches that in your software, log on to www.gateway.gov.uk
