VAT registration number formats

Each EC country has its own registration number, in its own format. You can get your software to check these numbers as they are recorded to customer and supplier records:

If you have difficulty entering a number, check the format is correct.

Croatia	HR	12345678901	11	A block of 11 digits.
Cyprus	CY	12345678L	9	Single block of 9 characters. The last character must be a letter.
Czech Republic	CZ	12345678 or 123456789 or 1234567890	8, 9 or 10	A block of eight, nine or ten digits. Where 11, 12 or 13 numbers are quoted delete the first three as these are a tax code.
Denmark	DK	12345678	8	A block of eight digits.
Estonia	EE	123456789	9	A block of nine digits.
Finland	FI	12345678	8	A block of eight digits.
France	FR	12345678901 X1234567890 1X123456789 XX123456789	11	A block of eleven characters. May include any alphabetical characters, except O or I in the first or second or first and second characters. Note: Must be the 11 alphanumeric TVA number, not the 14 digit SERIT number.
Germany	DE	123456789	9	Must be the nine digit 'Umsatzsteuer Identifikationsnummer'.
Greece*	EL	123456789	9	A block of nine digits.
Hungary	HU	12345678	8	A block of eight digits.
Ireland	IE	1234567X, 1X23456X or 1234567XX	8 or 9	Includes one or two alphabetical characters, last, or second and last, or last 2.
Italy	IT	12345678901	11	A block of eleven digits.
Latvia	LV	12345678901	11	A block of eleven digits.
Lithuania	LT	123456789 123456789012	9 or 12	A block of nine digits or a block of twelve digits.
Luxembourg	LU	12345678	8	A block of eight digits.
Malta	MT	12345678	8	A block of eight digits.
Netherlands	NL	123456789B01	12	A block of twelve characters. The tenth character is always B. The last three characters are always in the range B01 to B99.
Poland	PL	1234567890	10	A block of ten digits.
Portugal	PT	123456789	9	A block of nine digits.
Romania	RO	1234567890	2 to 10	One block of minimum of 2 digits and maximum of ten digits.
Slovak Republic	SK	1234567890	10	A block of ten digits.
Slovenia	SI	12345678	8	A block of eight digits.
Spain	ES	X12345678 or, 12345678X or, X1234567X	9	A block of nine characters. Includes one or more letters; either first, last or first and last.
Sweden	SE	123456789001	12	A block of twelve digits.
United Kingdom	GB	There are a number of valid formats		Identifies branch traders. Identifies Government Departments. Identifies Health Authorities.
		123 4567 89	9	A block of 3 digits, a block of 4 digits and a block of 2 digits.
		123 4567 89 012	12	A block of 3 digits, a block of 4 digits, a block of 2 digits and a block of 3 digits.
		GD123 or HA123	5	A block of 5 characters.

Note: * The country code GR is used for Greece in your software. To conform to the coding used by your tax authority, it is adjusted to EL in your VAT reports.
