Product defaults

Defaults are a broad range of values and settings that help you manage your products consistently.

Defaults are used when creating product records. You can configure these defaults to save you time when you are creating product records.

To access product defaults open Settings > Product Defaults.

DefaultsOpen this section

Item Type

Choose the default product type, from Stock Item , Non-Stock Item and Service Item.

Sales nominal code

Enter the code you want to be used as the default sales nominal code when you create a new product record.

Tax code

Choose the tax code to be used as the default for your products.

You can override this default setting when you enter individual transactions, for example on product invoices.

Purchase nominal code

Enter the code you want to be used as the default Purchase Nominal Code, when you create a new product record.

Unit of sale

Enter up to eight characters to describe the default unit of sale, for example each or box.

Category

Choose the Product Category to be used as the default for your products.

You can also set up these categories using the Products tab of the Configuration Editor.

Department

Sage Instant Accounts Plus and Sage 50 Accounts only

Enter the department you want to use as the default for your product records, or choose one from the drop-down list.

The departments in this list are set up in Company > Links pane > Department.

Image options

Use the drop-down list to choose how you display any pictures of your stock on the Web tab within each Product record.

By default, it is set to Maintain Image Size. This displays the image, exactly the same size as the image that you have linked to the product record.

Alternatively, select the Fit Image to window option. This option resizes the image so that it fills the entire Image area of the Web tab, no matter how large or small the original image is.

EC VAT description

From this drop-down list choose a default EC Sales description that is used, when creating new products.

This can be set to No description by default for new and upgraded users.

Four default descriptions are provided, and a further four additional messages can be created. With the exception of No description, which is read only, all default messages can be amended.

Decimal precisionOpen this section

Quantity DP

From this drop-down list to choose the number of decimal places to which your product quantities can be set, up to a maximum of six.

Unit DP

From this drop-down list to choose the number of decimal places to which your product prices can be entered, up to a maximum of six.

If you set the Unit DP to a figure other than two, each time you create a product invoice, the net amount on the invoice rounds to two decimal places.

Descriptions

Sage 50 Accounts Plus and Sage 50 Accounts Professional only
Discount A-E

These are the labels that are used to indicate the name of the discounts on the Discount tab of each product record.

You may prefer to rename the labels to something more meaningful to your business. Any change is reflected in both new and existing product records.
